Sheriff Merritt

Sheriff Keith Merritt was elected to this office by the citizens of Orange County and started with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office on January 1, 2009 with over 30 years of law enforcement experience. He began his law enforcement career in 1979 as a Reserve Deputy Sheriff for the county serving in several Reserve capacities over the next 15 years. In October 1994 he was elected Orange County Constable Pct. #1, was re-elected several times and served as such through December 2008.

Sheriff Merritt is very proud to have been a handler of two Police K-9s, Ali and Thor from January 1989 through August 2004. He holds a Master Peace Officer Certification and has over 1200 hours of specialized training.

The Sheriff has lived in Orange most of his life. His mother was the late Clara (Jo) Burnett Merritt and his step-father, the late R.W. Merritt. He has been married to Marlene Hennigan Merritt for 44 years and they have two sons, Robert Merritt and wife, Misty; Craig Merritt and wife, Tabitha. Keith and Marlene have two granddaughters, Jordan and Taylor, one grandson, Easton, one great-granddaughter, McKarsyn, and one great grandson, Ayden.
